The Story Behind
This Locomotive
Works Nr. 1295, built in 1862, represents the pinnacle of Victorian-era royal railway engineering. Commissioned for Khedive Ismail, the locomotive's artistic design was entrusted to Matthew Digby Wyatt — the same architect who designed Paddington Station's roof. The result was a locomotive unlike any other in the world.
The cab features hand-stitched leather sofas, polished brass fittings, and arabesques inspired by Islamic geometric patterns. The exterior panels display intricate marquetry work — inlaid wood veneers forming complex floral and geometric motifs. This was not merely a locomotive; it was a mobile throne room.
Today, the locomotive survives in near-original condition at the ENR Railway Museum in Ramses Square, Cairo — one of the few surviving examples of royal railway transport anywhere in the world. Our 3D model was created from direct photogrammetry scans and museum-provided engineering drawings.
